Lake District Sports - Lake District Windsurfing
WindSurfing The winds that make for challenging sailing in coastal areas are manna from heaven for windsurfers. A strong sou-wester
will see boards out at St Bees, while Allonby Bay provides waves big enough for jumping and Roa Island near Barrow-in-Furness offers a mix of
conditions depending on the tide, with flat water for speed sailing and enclosed areas for the less experienced.
The Lakes are ideal for that first taste of this rapidly evolving sport. The latest wide boards and lightweight rigs allow newcomers
to master the basics in just a few hours. Whatever the wind, there’s instant fun to be had, with hosts of accessible launching places and plenty
of RYA approved schools to get you started. The west coast and Morecambe Bay are also becoming popular places to practise the most radical of all
wind-powered watersports: kitesurfing.
