Ferryhill Virtual Tour - A Pictorial Guide

The Cut from the Bridge

It was planned to blast through the hill to form the Cut as early as 1832 to help the horses who struggled up the steep incline of Durham Bank, but the plan was abandoned when the Railway was built. The plan was resurrected in 1913, but was again postponed, this time by the outbreak of the First World War. It was eventually completed after 5 years work and opened on June 30th 1923 at a cost of nearly £50,000. You can just see the start of the Dean Bank housing over the wall to the left of the picture.

The bridge in the background carries the road down to Dean Bank Industrial Estate.

The bridge here carries the road across the Cut towards Dean Bank. To the south is another bridge, a footbridge which was renewed in the early 1990's. This allows access to Dean Bank from Darlington Road. It was a grey steel structure which was long past it's sell by date, being replaced with a more modern and pleasing version.
