Ferryhill Market Place was the area around which the old town was built. On an old map of 1861 there is little building developed anywhere in Ferryhill other than here (see A drawing of Ferryhill Village after 1851). In Medieval times the town probably had a boundary wall and there were lots of narrow passages running between the buildings on the north and south sides. This made the village easier to defend against invaders (see Spooky Alley).
The Market Place can be regarded as the centre of Ferryhill, with most of the shops located here. Ferryhill Market Place is particularly well served by fast food outlets, including 3 pizzerias, 2 chinese Takeaways and an Indian Takeaway, too. There are also 2 supermarkets (Safeway and Co-op).
As well as food, Ferryhill is served by a number of pubs. In the Market Place there are The White Horse, The Greyhound, The Post Boy and Llewellyn's, as well as Ferryhill Workingmen's Club. Other pubs that have since closed are The Wheatsheaf, The Bay Horse Inn, The Red Lion. Also on Durham Bank were The Kings Head and The Saddlers Arms.
