The Town Hall was built in 1867 on the site of the old poor houses and was originally used as a Concert Hall, Library and Reading Room. The building cost £700. When the new library was built in the 1960's, the original library in the Town Hall became a conference room.
There are two memorials in the grounds at the front of the Town Hall. The Ferryhill War Memorial and the Walton Memorial, which was put up to commemorate an act of bravery by a Mr Walton in Dean and Chapter Colliery (see the Durham Mining Museum site for more details).
Up until the end of the 19th century there was a pond in front of the town hall, one of two ponds close to the market place. The other was Hallgarth pond, near Manor Farm.On the southern side of the Town Hall was the original Ferryhill Fire Station.
