The central road leading from the main gates leading onto the Sports Ground. There is a Bowling Green here, along with several football pitches, which has been home to Ferryhill Athletic before they started playing their Wearside League games at Shildon.
The Recreation Ground was originally created by the former Dean and Chapter Colliery, where the presence of coal was first recorded in 1343.The Dean and Chapter Welfare Committee was registered as a charity in 1936 and conveyed the land to Ferryhill Town Council in 1966, who continue to maintain the Recreation Ground for the people of Ferryhill.
