There is always a good display of flowers in the park. The flower beds are tended by the Council, who have similar superb displays around Ferryhill. Ferryhill has probably more than it's fair share of gardeners, who pit their wits against others from the North East in the annual Northumbria in Bloom competition.
The Recreation Ground was originally created by the former Dean and Chapter Colliery, where the presence of coal was first recorded in 1343.The Dean and Chapter Welfare Committee was registered as a charity in 1936 and conveyed the land to Ferryhill Town Council in 1966, who continue to maintain the Recreation Ground for the people of Ferryhill.
