The view from the bottom of the Station Bank close to the railway bridge shows the Eden Arms Hotel to the left foreground. Halfway up the bank is the Miner's Welfare Institute building, now used by the Ferryhill Amateur Operatic Society and run by the Mainsforth & District Community Association.
The Miners's Institute was built in 1927 by George Lazenby. The miners of Mainsforth Colliery paid for the building and it's upkeep by subscription of a few pennies a week. The hall was a noted venue, with a high reputation throughout the county. During the second World War, people would travel from miles around to the Saturday night dances which featured some of the best known dance bands of their age.
