The railway line is the main line from London to Edinburgh. The nearest stations are Durham to the north and Darlington to the south.
Here can be seen the steepness of the cutting through which the railway runs. The platforms used to run under the bridge and there was a lift down to them from the centre of the bridge. The railway station closed in the 1960s as a result of Dr. Beechings cuts.
A few years ago a petition was started to try to get Ferryhill railway station re-opened as it would be very useful for all local people to travel to Newcastle and Darlington, particularly after some bus companies have now withdrawn their services to these places.
