Ferryhill Virtual Tour - A Pictorial Guide

Merrington Road

Work began on the school on April 1st 1962, the builders were Stephensons of Bishop Auckland. The school was opened in 1964 at a cost of £500,000 as Ferryhill Grammar School and the first Headmaster was JL Bowman.

The site covers approximately 25 acres, with two football pitches, two rugby pitches, two hockey pitches, a cricket square, an indoor swimming pool, an athletics track and two hard core playing areas.

It became a Comprehensive in the 1970's.

The Mill and farm stand behind it, alongside the mast.

The school is now Ferryhill Business and Enterprise College, and is well regarded in the area for it's level of education and facilities.

Merrington Road runs along the high ridge to the west of Ferryhill and at it's western end it is about 600 feet above sea-level. The road is quite exposed and is therefore very prone to blocking by snowdrifts in winter-time, as snow blows from the fields to the south or from the north in windy weather.

Superb views are to be had to the south over Aycliffe, Darlington, Tees-side and the Cleveland Hills and on a very clear day the cliffs are visible as the North York Moors meet the North Sea. To the north side of the road, the vista is of Spennymoor and further to the North West the Wear Valley disappears up into the Pennines. Durham Cathedral is prominent as you look towards north.
