Across to the site of the former Mainsforth Colliery. In the background can be seen the form of the old spoil heap, now unrecognisable, clothed in trees. Mainsforth Pit closed in 1968 after a 64 year spell of mining. It was one of the main employers in Ferryhill along with the Dean and Chapter Colliery. For more information see the Durham Mining Museum website (http://www.dmm.org.uk/mindex.htm).
The site is now occupied by a Car Auctions company.
Rudds Hill is the southern outcrop of the limestone escarpment to the west of the Ferryhill Gap. Superb views are available to the south. The housing estate was built in the late 60's/early 70's.
