Ferryhill sits on the western edge of the Ferryhill Gap, a natural gateway in the Limestone Escarpment that outcrops on the Eastern Durham Plateau. The main settlement lies along the sw-ne ridge, with later development to the south of the ridge.To the North on the main A167 road is Durham City, and then Newcastle. To the south is Darlington. Ferryhill is located 6 miles south of Durham and 12 miles north of Darlington on the main A167 road. The main A1(M) Motorway runs a couple of miles to the east and junction 60 is as good as any to turn off for Ferryhill. The East Coast rail line linking London to Edinburgh runs through the Ferryhill Gap. Nearby villages include Spennymoor to the north west, Kirk Merrington to the west, Chilton to the south and West Cornforth to the north east.
By road: 6 miles south from Durham City, 12 miles north from Darlington on the A167.
By rail: from Durham City station on the East Coast Main Line.
By sea: from Tees-side or Newcastle.
By air: the nearest airport is Tees-side International, about 14 miles to the south east.
