Occupation of house rules issued by the Dean and Chapter Colliery 1913. These were found on the inside of the back doors of all colliery houses in the Dean Bank area.
REGULATIONS
With the view of maintaining the good sanitary conditions of this house, the tenant is requested to abide by the following regulations :--
Scullery Set-Pot : The bottom of the scullery set-pot must always be covered with water previous to lighting a fire underneath. Any breakage by wrongful use must be paid for by the tenant.
Scullery sink : No tea leaves or other waste must be thrown down the Sink, which must be kept clean, and hot water poured down the outlet at intervals.
Kitchen Range : This must be carefully attended to and properly cleaned out, an under no consideration must powder be used for cleaning the flues. Any injury as the result of firing by powder must be paid for by the tenant.
Ventilation of Bedrooms : All the windows are provided with check bead so as to allow ventilation between the meeting rails of the window sashes. The windows should be kept open as much as possible during the day.
Bedrooms without fireplaces : These are provided with "Hit and Miss" ventilators which should always be kept open.
Blind Rollers : These have been provided by the owners, and any injury or loss must be made good by the tenant.
Chimneys : These must be swept at intervals in compliance with the Bye-Laws of the Sedgefield Rural District Council.
Door Steps : In order to maintain the present level of the steps, so as to keep out the rain, the tenant is required to refrain from the use of Sandstone.
Caller-up : Each Coal-hewer or other workman wishing to be called up, must mark the time on the slate at the door, and not upon the door.
Pigeons : As the slates on the roof are regularly broken by stones being thrown at Pigeons, none will be allowed to be kept, either in the house or yard.
Yard : No hens, ducks or rabbits are allowed to be kept in the Yard.
Yard Sink : When cleaning the yard, all the rubbish should be swept into a corner and thrown into the ashpit instead of being swept into the yard sink.
Coal-house door : This door must be kept closed (except when in use) so as to prevent it being blown off the hinges by the wind.
Earth Closet : Slop water must not be emptied into the Closet, the lid of which must always be kept down except when in use.
Clothes Lines : Only the clothes line hooks, put in by the owners, must be used, and nails or hooks must nt be driven into the Earth Closet or Coal House door frames.
Back Street : No clothes will be allowed to be dried in the back street, as it must always be kept open for loading workmen's coals.
The tenant is earnestly requested to assist the owners in keeping the property free from dilapidations by restraining children from doing wilful damage, and by seeing that the foregoing Regulations are complied with.
On behalf of the owners of Dean and Chapter Colliery, December 1913.
